Plant milks!

Hello! Sorry it's been a while since I've written a proper blog post, but I'm back! Well, I've had a good idea for one! I was in Asda and noticed a 'new' own brand oat milk. So it got me thinking, where are the cheapest plant milks?! Well, hopefully this blog will answer it, and maybe a bit more. I'll be comparing the 4 main supermarkets of Tesco, Sainsburys, Morrisons and Asda, looking at soya, oat, almond, rice and coconut milk (plus some notable mentions). Tiny disclaimer in bold: I have not tried all the milks I'm suggesting. If there is vitamin D in the milk, I have done my best to check it is from vegan sources. Let's get to business!

Soya

Cheapest I've found: Tesco unsweetened Everyday Value longlife at 59p

                                Asda smartprice unsweetened longlife at 59p

Others to note: Morrisons do a sweetened and unsweetened longlife for 60p each.

Oat

Cheapest I've found: Asda's new own brand longlife oat milk at £1

Others to note: Alpro frequently have offers on oat milk, for example, when I made this post, Morrisons, Sainsburys and Tesco had Alpro longlife oat milk for £1.

Almond

Cheapest I've found: Sainsburys longlife (both sweetened and unsweetened) at £1 permanently.

Others to note: Alpro is again often on offer, with Tesco selling the Alpro roasted almond longlife milk for £1 as I type this!

Rice

Cheapest I've found: There appears to surprisingly be no 'cheap' rice milk. However as I type this, Rice Dream is on offer for £1 in Morrisons and Alpro is £3 for 3 there too.

Coconut

Cheapest I've found: Asda chilled free from coconut milk at 97p

Others to note: Tesco currently have Alpro longlife coconut milk for £1, (as do Sainsburys and Morrisons) and Koko dairy free chilled at £2 for 2. Morrisons also have Coconut dream for £1 and appear to sell fresh Alpro coconut milk for £1 all the time (not an offer price!).

Hope this helps a little. If anyone chooses to say 'veganism is so expensive!' feel free to point this blog at them, tapping the 59p soya milk, then staple a print out to their forehead. No don't. Please don't. ;-) 

Frozen vegetable joy!

Hello! I don't know how well known this is, so I've decided to write a post about it so everyone definitely knows! If you're keen on veg and have a nice sized freezer, you could save money (and reduce potential food waste) by buying frozen veg instead! I appreciate this isn't for everyone (as this may mean more plastic for some people), and the savings may vary seasonally, but I hope it might at least help a fair few people to save some money but still eat a good, nutritious meal.

A few examples (using Tesco prices)where you can save money include:

Mini corn on the cobs: Frozen - £1.30 for 6 (roughly), Fresh - £1.50 for 4
Chopped/whole leeks: Frozen - £1.00 for 700g (1.43 per kg), Fresh - £2.00 per kg
Broccoli: Frozen florets - £1.10 (1.23 per kg), Fresh - £1.57 per kg
Mushrooms: Frozen slices - £1.00 (£2.00 per kg), Fresh whole mushrooms - £2.27 per kg of the cheapest available
Courgettes: Frozen chopped - £1.00 (£1.43 per kg), Fresh unchopped - £1.98 per kg of cheapest available
Plus of course, peas!

Not all veg works out cheaper though, often the veg that has been prepared such as diced onions or peeled shallots come out more expensive than their fresh alternative.

This is just a few options available and doesn't include the various mixed frozen bags of which one pack can all go into a casserole for £1.10 for a kg (carrot, swede, turnip, celery and onion).

All you need to do is keep an eye on the price per kg to work out which is the better value at the time. Whilst I'm not sure I'd advise that this frozen veg can be used for meals where the vegetable is the main part of the meal (like a roast), they can certainly go in meals such as casseroles (as above), soups, risottos, pasta sauces etc. This might be a great plan for those of you who use a slow cooker! It has even been studied that frozen veg is as equally nutritious (if not more) than fresh, so long as it's frozen soon after harvest.

Hello! Morrison's currently have an offer on Moo Free baking drops and mini bars!

Until 12th September, Moo Free baking drops are reduced from £2.72 to just £2.18 and mini bars are reduced from 81p to 75p. Might be a good time to stock up if you're a keen baker! Or just like the chocolate (melted, to eat with a spoon...I'm not speaking from experience at all... ...)

Alpro Ice Cream Offer!

Hello! A little birdy told me (thank you!) about a particularly good offer on Alpro ice cream that is available at Asda at the moment! All of their ice creams are down to just £2.00, making them cheaper than Swedish Glace. Yum!

Asda don't seem to provide an end date for offers, so now would be a good time to try them or stock up if you've already tasted the deliciousness. Since it says rollback, I would think that the offer will be around for at least another week (don't hold me to that though).

Asda also have a few other vegan offers at the moment, such as on Alpro milks (4 for £4) so it'd be well worth having a look around whilst your buying ice cream!

I very much appreciate people alerting me to offers, so feel free to let me know if your spot any good deals!

Asda vegan Quorn offer!

Hello! Quite a short, simple post, Asda currently have an offer on Vegan Quorn, as well as Cauldron's vegan sausages and burgers! The offer is 2 for £6.00, however they don't provide an end date that I can find.

Online, fishless fingers and Cauldron burgers are unavailable, but I believe these are also on the offer!

Tesco Offers Everywhere!

Hello! Tesco are have a massive 'free from' offer going on at the moment. All of their own free from items (that I can see!) are on 3 for 2. This includes (but is certainly not limited to) delicious items such as their new vegan cheeses, new millionaires pudding and new cheesecakes! It also includes frozen products such as their ice cream cones and Magnum style ice creams, as well as store cupboard essentials like their salad cream. The offer lasts until 16th May, woohoo!

Not only that, but they also currently have the new and quite popular Freaks of Nature puddings on offer, was £2.30, now £1.30. Whilst this is still a little expensive, now would be a good time to try them if you like the sound of them! Valid until 23rd May.

NOT ONLY THAT! But Tesco are also currently running a lot of offers on Alpro products, including dessert moments half price, was £2.00, now £1.00, yoghurt offers making them only £1.00 and fresh milks only £1.00! Valid until 23rd May. PLUS! Alpro ice creams are just £2.00 until 22nd May.

They also have some other great deals, but these felt like they were the best, particularly as they feature some new and exciting products.

Fry's ice cream Ocado offer!

Hello! After the excellent Fry's deal Ocado recently ran... THEY'VE ONLY GONE AND PUT ON ANOTHER AWESOME OFFER! This time it's on all 5 of Fry's new vegan ice creams, now half price. They were £4.99, but now they are just £2.49. This is a great way to try them if you want to, but didn't want to pay a riskily higher amount. The offer is on until 16/05/2017. Woohoo!

Easter Egg Deals!

Hello! It's Easter next week and this year has been a particularly good year for vegan Easter Eggs. Since I'm all about saving money, I thought I'd share the deals I know of for Easter Eggs ready for next weekend.

Asda: Asda have a great deal of Kinnerton Easter Eggs which also feature their dark chocolate bar. This is 3 for £10, instead of £5.00 each. So basically buy 2 get one free. I don't know when this runs out.

Morrisons: Morrisons have Moo Free Easter Eggs (bunnycomb is a popular one!) for 3 for £10.00 instead of £4.00 each. If you like these, this is a good deal! Offer is on until 18/04/2017.

Tesco: Tesco have 3 of their own brand eggs on offer. Their eggs with buttons are on offer at 2 for £3.00, usually £2.50 each and their finest caramel egg with truffles is now £3.50 instead of £4.00. They're on offer until 18/04/2017 as well.

Waitrose: New addition! Waitrose also have Moo Free Easter Eggs on offer at 3 for £7.00 until 18/04/2017. This isn't quite as good as Morrisons, but if you don't need or want 3 eggs, this is great! Usually £4.25 from Waitrose. Plus Waitrose have all three flavours online!
